To support the recovery from Coronavirus, the Government drove forward a programme to put in place temporary walking and cycling schemes to help people get out and socially distance.
Through the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority, we secured money from the Government’s Emergency Active Travel Fund to implement temporary changes to the public highway, such as:
- Pop-up cycle lanes
- Wider pavements
- Safer junctions
- Bus-only routes
The Government relaxed certain legislation and guidance to enable a faster delivery of walking and cycling schemes. We worked with the city and district councils to prepare a list of schemes which we delivered to support the recovery from Coronavirus.
The country faced a huge public health emergency. These quick measures supported people by helping them to walk and cycle more, whilst creating space for pedestrians so they could adhere to the social distancing rules. The measures reduced through traffic to allow us to widen the footpaths.
Schemes
We used Experimental Traffic Regulation Orders (ETROs) and Temporary Traffic Regulation Orders (TTROs) to implement many of the schemes. Information on the schemes undertaken and their locations are listed below.
For more information on how these orders work, the schemes we are delivering and their consultation periods, please visit our Traffic Regulation Orders section.
The Greater Cambridge Partnership (GCP) undertook a number of schemes in Cambridge. Please visit the GCP website for more information.
We also have a Google map of projects currently in progress for both Cambridgeshire County Council and GCP.
